Indie Label Heyday

Ward Archer of Archer Records in Memphis explains the appeal of small independent record labels:

"It's the best time in the history of recorded music to be a small label," says Rey Flemings, new president and chief executive officer of the Memphis and Shelby County Music Commission. "Major record companies are leaving the artist development business, largely.

"The cost structure, the business model, for major labels doesn't enable them to support artists that are only looking to have 25,000 to 50,000 units in annual sales. That's a huge win for an independent label, based on their cost structures."
