When satire is taken seriously, the results are often amusing. This ministry wants to shut down Landover Baptist. Reminds me of the preachers using The Onion as a source in their anti-Harry Potter sermons and protests.
Posted by david on July 22, 2003I think this site itself is a parody, don't you?
a. it's fairly well designed and coded, much better than most born again sites
b. the language is self-mocking in tone at times
c. retired machinist? that's a straight nod to the Onion

Posted by: ammi on August 3, 2003 06:55 AMThose who want to shut down the Landover Baptist Church are just a bunch of fascist.
Posted by: Marc on September 22, 2003 10:50 PMNo pal, its not about fascism. Its about being sacriligious. I mean, if you want to be atheist then good for you man, go ahead. but dont make fun of peoples most sacred beliefs, hide the fact that its a joke very well so people don't initially know its fake, and then say "hey, its just a lighthearted satire!" cmon thats just ignorance, and uh no ones laughing
Posted by: will on October 21, 2003 09:42 PMI think it's damn funny. A laugh out loud riot. The jokes never stop ... If you can't take a joke then you don't have to look at the site!
Posted by: Fucko on October 23, 2003 11:25 PMDude(s), you're both kinda right. I saw the "halloween" page on the site and it was real funny! Seemed odd for a christian site though, and it did take me a while to figure out it was a joke. There is some stuff there that touches a few nerves so I can see how it's gonna upset people. To be fair, a few things got on my nerves a little, but overall I reckon you have to take it or leave it. You never know how God's gonna work!
Posted by: SomeChristianGuy on October 27, 2003 07:18 PMThe Landover Baptist Church beliefs are undoubtly based on the Holy Bible. I am convinced those who are trying to shut down the Landover Baptist Church's website are just a bunch of Satan's agents. They want to prevent the American People from hearing the Word of God, since the Landover Baptist Church is the only True Christians' Church in the world.
I am now determined to launch a website that will be dedicated to shut down the website that wants to shut down the Landover Baptist Church's website.
God Bless America. God Bless the Greatest President of the United States of America's History, George W. Bush. God Bless the Landover Baptist Church.
Posted by: GWBushGreatestFan on November 6, 2003 12:03 AMShut down landover
"Sacred" beliefs do not entitle the holder of those beliefs to escape critisim or even ridicule. If Christians of a certain stripe are offended by Landover Baptist, then remove the bookmark from your browser. Good grief, why do we keep having to remind people to not look at offensive things. The right to posit offesive things is the same right that allows the religious to posit their "sacred" beliefs. You can not have a 1st Ammendment and then attach qualifiers based upon content. It won't work. Either we believe in freedom of speech or not. Make up your minds.
Posted by: Dude in Texas on January 1, 2004 08:35 PMi think the satire of landove baptist is funny as hell and it is great how the religious nuts get there panties in a bunch about it. i bet it must bother them to think that there are free thinking people in this country who realize what utter nonsense religion is. want to believe in something? believe in yourself.
just my $.02
Posted by: suprtzar on January 8, 2004 02:09 AMOk, I've been a christian for awhile now and I can tell this is a joke without having to search for the terms of service. But a new christin might not know its a joke and take it seriously. That could make them really messed up!!! Now obviously there is fredom of speech so it can't be shut down. So all I ask is that they have some respect for people who are christian by doing 2 things in addition to their terms of service.... Put "Satire/Parody" or something like that in the page title and have a banner or something on the main page saying "the site is a satire/parody and is not to be takenas a serious church"

Posted by: Ken on January 10, 2004 01:54 AMOk try this on for size. The christians argument is that Landover is is polluting the beliefs of unaware, rookie christians. Has anyone checked out godsaidmansaid.com? I wonder what christians think this site is saying to would be christians. This site preaches some of the most absurd "facts". Including: "scientific proof" why evolution is wrong, the world is only 6000 years old, etc... Guaranteed for as many laughs as the Landover site, except it's authors are completely serious!
Posted by: Andrew on January 12, 2004 09:03 AMHEATHENS!!! I feel I cannot be mistaken in assuming this site is sponsored by the devil himself! With homosexuals, transvestites and other heathens twisting the minds of our citizenry.
What next?? Calling the Godly Mormon faith a cult????
It's wrong, damn wrong, to try to shut down a web site just because you disagree with them. To that end, all who support freedom of speech should add a link to the Landover Baptist web site on their own web pages. Do it. Do it now!
Posted by: Hans on March 16, 2004 08:11 PMDont' shut it down. But please list it as what it is. A joke.
Posted by: Me on March 23, 2004 08:56 PMIt's some of the best satire I've ever seen.
You can't deny someone the right to make fun of you just because it hurts your feelings. If what Landover Baptist was doing was inciting hatred or riots or acts of violence that would be one thing. But it's not. It's intended to get people to stop and think (with their OWN brains for once...) about themselves and the world around them. That's what satire is.
And Saint Facetia spoke, and said: Build a bridge and GET OVER IT!
Posted by: SaintFacetia on May 9, 2004 03:05 PMim a committed christian and i have to say that i think the site is very funny. i have no problem with people challenging my beliefs because quite frankly, i know that i'm right and they're wrong.
I just wish that athiests in general would stop making so many disparaging remarks about religion since theyre so 'enlightened' and 'informed' about the world. Did you witness the Big Bang and evolution (which by the way has been very much disproved)? No. Have you witness to the truth in the form of the Holy Bible? Yes.
Can you have a fulfilling life based only on experiences with people and material possesions? No. Can you welcome Christ as your personal Saviour and live a fulfilling life in accordance with him? YES!
The truth is out there my athiest brothers, you just haven't found it yet, but I pray that you will.

It tricked me, but I loved it! The reason it tricked me is because I run into many sites like this that actually are real. Scary, huh?
I should have known by the good graphic design and lack of spelling errors it was a joke. But you got me! Good for you!
Posted by: Hex on June 7, 2004 03:56 AMWhat ever happened to Judy B. Christian?
Posted by: on June 11, 2004 06:05 PMi absolutely love landover baptist church. i laughed so hard i cried. and for all of you apposed to this site don't go to it. it's as simple as that. if u can't stand the heat stay out of the kitchen.
Posted by: vegan"witch" on July 8, 2004 02:44 PMI don't think that the site intends to make fun of Christians, persay. I think the sites creators are aiming at human stupidity. Those of you who believed the site to be real, or those of you who get flustered when told that's it's a satire; that is what the site is poking fun at. I am in the same boat, and I must say, even the people who think the "get" the satire but then get angry at it for being confusing are simply angry because they realized that they weren't intelligent enough to realize its absurdity from the start.
Posted by: Nate on August 30, 2004 09:10 AMThe Landover Churh is connected with Betty Bowers, have you seen her site? People seriously ask her what to wear to an abortion bombing and she seriously answers them. None of them are Christians. They are anti-christ, and defame the good name of the Lord. They must be stopped, they are worse than any terror group or any other evil because they do their business in the name of Jesus- never have I seen so much utter hatred and disrespect for all people. They are racist, sexist and encourage child abuse and not only that they brag about those things. Just check out what they do to young boys to "prevent" them from being homosexuals and the signs they talk about are not even related. It is sick and I will do everything in my power to help shut them down because LANDOVER CHURCH IS WORSE THAN ANY TERRORIST GROUP OR ANY SITE ANYONE COULD FIND ON THE INTERNET *ACCIDENTALLY AND IF THEY DO NOT DETER UNKOWING PEOPLE FROM TURNING TO CHRIST BECAUSE OF THEIR LIES THAN THEY WILL HAVE PEOPLE THINK THE WORST OF CHRIST AND THEIR ARE VULNERABLE PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO DO NOT KNOW ANY DIFFERENT!
Posted by: Brittany on September 16, 2004 10:08 AMand I know the site is phony. It is along with tons of others sick and I can't see how people get entertained by trash like that. I wandered upon by accident looking for a real Christian site.

Posted by: Brittany on September 16, 2004 06:47 PMCripes sake, Jolene,
Calm down--unless your comment is satire itself, then...BRILLIANT! FUCKING BRILLIANT!
You should see how people get so worked up over whitehouse.org, the sister site for landover. The same author also runs chickenhead.com, gwbush.com and bettybowers.com.
People e-mail whitehouse.org screaming, "FAGGOT PINKO COCK-SUCKERS!! BURN IN HELL YOU ATHEISTS!! STOP MAKING FUN OF BUSH YOU HOMOS!! GO TO IRAQ AND DIE!! I'm a Christian!!"
Little do they know the site has been around since 1998 and they were merciless to Clinton, too. It's satire.
They're all hilarious. But peole's reactions and e-mails are funnier.
I honestly had believed that this was real although common sense told me otherwise(only because I don't put this past SOME baptists and I have been burned by them many times throughout my life, not all of them either but a high percentage of the really legalistic religious ones that obviously don't really have a relationship with Christ). It was at a Baptist church where I turned to satanism as a teenager because they weren't teaching the WHOLE truth about Christ, but Christ delivered me from that torture and now I try to do my best to live for him. The only thing I think about this is it is a mockery of Christ which hurts me on the inside because of how good he has been to me(and for that matter some people I have met ACTUALLY think like this so I find it disturbing) but if you find it ammusing, more power to you, it is not my place to judge you and tell you wether you are in the right or wrong for laughing, it is between you and God...
Posted by: gootn on September 18, 2004 12:50 PMYou're absolutely friggin' right Neil. The only thing funnier than Landoverbaptist.org is the people who take them seriously.
Posted by: Acosmicist on September 19, 2004 06:45 AMIt's a joke,no?
Even though it ridicules the worst of sinners in the Church, I did pick up some use useful infomation on what the Bible says on certain matters. The Baptist Church I know and love, flings its doors open to the lost in hopes that some might be saved. But I can see what it looks like when legalism takes over.God preserve the Baptist Church from becoming like like Landover!
The patriarch Joseph said to his brothers,"You meant to do evil but God has worked it out for good." May the Church take Landover as a warning.
nice site, not too much personal bashing and thats a good thing
Posted by: ROB on October 15, 2004 01:32 PMLandrover is obviously an elaborate satire. They have the right to free speech, like everyone, but I believe they take it a step too far. If there was to be a site mocking the creeds of Islam, Hinduism, atheism or any other belief, people would go nuts over how prejudice the site was. But some people choose to defend Landrover for mocking the beliefs of millions of people worldwide. Stupefying.
Posted by: theswift on October 19, 2004 10:58 AMIs everyone really that stupid? Obviously Landover is a joke, but if you really look at what it says it shows a very real problem. The site's creators rely on the Bible for their humor--in showing us all that when everything in the Bible is taken literally it is a horrible, foolish work of fantasy! Are the people who are offended offended because their religion is being made fun of, or are they upset because someone is showing them their own stupidity?
Posted by: Ryan on October 20, 2004 04:27 PMFirst of all the bible stems many "religions" or sects and The Landover site only hints to how legalism can get out of control, but that is not Christian behavior; Christianity is what is being made fun of in the most horrid and blasphemous way. Calling people stupid for their belief in the bible is nearly as bad as the site itself. But it is becoming clear to me that we can't stop any persons right to say what they want and we shouldn't try; it would just be a relief to know that people were thinking with a full deck before they profane others, including and especially Christ.
Posted by: Brittany on October 28, 2004 09:07 PMI personally think, as my role model Kevin Smith would say..."God has a sense of humor, look at the platypus..." But seriously folks, I am a big fan of satire who thinks Kevin's "Dogma" was a work of genius that brought me CLOSER to God... We should look at Landover Baptist in these simple terms..."Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you..." In other words seperate yourselves if Landover Baptist offends you, it offends me yet it has to be there because freedom is a two edged sword, and God Himself knows Christians will always get the sharp side because, in this "Christian" country, true Christians have no rights. Remember something, fellow Christians...someday, "Every knee shall bow, every tounge confess..." So even those who find Christianity to be 'stupidity' will one day beg for Christs mercy...God Bless and keep you all...
Posted by: Codynootchies on November 5, 2004 07:19 AMgeez, serious problems out there. i was once born again. now i'm dead again. there's really nothing to it.
you guys never get teased when you were growing up? if you're a christian, i'm sorry for you, if you're a pagan, i'm sorry for you (like, you know, you define yourselves in christian terms, eh). just please, please don't try to convert me.
you're gonna die one day. if you want to always be looking over your shoulder your whole life cuz something/someone/somegod is out "there" pulling some strings, i'm also sorry for you.
landover works cause you all talk the same talk--otherwise you'd pass over it.
