The Darkness cover Radiohead's "Street Spirit," download the mp3.
Posted by david on December 03, 2003I can't believe someone actually took the time to arrange and record one of Radiohead's greatest songs in such a horrible manner. And not to mention, play it live! What a disgrace.
Posted by: Bryan Murphy on December 24, 2003 03:01 PMObviously you don't understand The Darkness.
I think the track is quite lovely.
it sounds like a completly different song. however, it's just as good, if not better.
Posted by: DANOOZOEO on January 1, 2004 12:53 AMThe Darkness version is awesome, the Radiohead original is boring....
DARKNESS ROCK, SO DOES THIS SONG
Posted by: on January 22, 2004 05:28 PMWell, i'm a big radiohead fan but I think the song is pretty funny.. It's too bad that too many people don't understand that the darkness is just a big Joke!
Posted by: sponge Bob on February 26, 2004 09:19 AMyour right Sponge bob, the darkness is a joke. a BIG JOKE.their version is a joke. RH's version even though its slow, its so much more. and fits so perfectly being the last song on the album. all anyone can play today is fast and heavy..THATS boring.

Posted by: on February 26, 2004 06:04 PMthe darkness is ok but this song is hopelessly played
Posted by: on March 5, 2004 08:25 PMI LOVE the darkness and their rendition of Thom Yorke's voice is pretty insane... awesome
Posted by: on March 5, 2004 08:58 PMThis is a good cover of a great song. Why is it good? Because it's fun and entertaining to listen to. Why is Radiohead's superior? Because it finishes The Bends with a fabulously morose tone, it has more meaning in terms of the music played ("fading out" doesn't come to mind with the Darkness' cover), and because it's not hair glam.
Posted by: on March 5, 2004 09:10 PMThe Darkness sucks shit, Radiohead is the best band I've ever heard. The lead singer of the darkness sounds TERRIBLE! Not cool and not funny. I can't even listen to their other stupid songs. Why do people like the darkness? The whole world is falling into a big shit pile. People are screwed up.
Posted by: Ben Easton on March 6, 2004 08:22 PMWhats wrong with buddy's voice? Maybe he has foreign objects somewhere in his body when he sings. Or he sounds like he could have been neutured as a child. The darkness sucks.
Posted by: Dink eye on March 6, 2004 08:34 PMhey alot of you need to have more an open mind when it comes to covers and listening to music in general-- yes, radiohead is an unbelievably talented and overall great rock band-- but also, the darkness (who I'm not a big fan of in the first place) cover this song in their own original style while keeping to the innate structure of street spirit song very well-- it is unique and what the song wouldve possibly sounded like if quiet riot recorded it in 1986! hahah ... anyhow- def. fun to listen to a nice RH cover with someone (lead singer of darkness) who can challenge thom's vocal falsettoness
Although you are right that this is all taken to seriously (and I am a huge Radiohead fan) the darkness are not that original.
Posted by: Bobbikk on March 8, 2004 02:06 PMi agree with shizzyhaun on this one. i dont particularly like the darkness, and radiohead is by far my favorite band. but if you're going to take the time to download and listen to a cover of a song, you do have to keep an open mind. of course it's going to sound different. it better sound different! otherwise what's the point? a few years back, a band in my town did a nice rock version of Stripped by depeche mode. it was probably the best cover i ever heard. however, this certainly is NOT one of those great covers which actually improves on the original. i'm just saying that it's fun to listen to songs from a different perspective. that's what covers are all about. just having fun. some of you people take this too seiously (and mind you, this is coming from a huge radiohead fan). the world isnt falling into a shit pile and the darkness isnt the antichrist. you people need to take a nap or something. but we are all entitled to our own opinion. so if you want to believe that the world is going to end because the darkness hacked up a radiohead song, who am i to try to change your mind? that's all i have to say on the matter.
Posted by: anthony on March 8, 2004 04:52 PMthat was amazing. mix the Darkness (the rockinest' ironic butt-rock to ever rock my knocked-off socks) with Radiohed (the most mind-blowingly creative and inspiring band since dinosaurs roamed the earth) and throw in Street Spirit (one of the most beautiful and chilling pieces in Radiohead's repertoire) and you've got yourself the zaniest, most original, most amazing covers to show up in a long time. i loved this.
Posted by: kevang on March 10, 2004 01:28 AMradiohead are a tremendous band and the bends is an unbelievable record
but this song is not meant to be technically better than radiohead's version.. they have taken a song which people like because of the feeling and emotion it carries, stripped all this emotion away from it and made it work. it's great because it's fun. it's also different and unique, the darkness shouldn't be taken so lightly.
Posted by: sheffield on March 29, 2004 05:28 AMThis is one of the funnest covers I've heard. I enjoy it for the same reasons that I liked Alien Ant Farms version of Smooth Criminal, and Phish's version of Gin and Juice. The replaying of the song in a completely different and irreverant style makes me laugh. This is a very clever rendition of a song I have always loved, played in a way I would have never have imagined.
Posted by: ArvinBravo on April 8, 2004 06:13 PMI'm an avid Radiohead fan, however its nice to see darkness doing something "different" with a classic tune.
Top tune fair play to the Darkness for once again being "different".
Of all the songs the darkness could have chosen to cover, they have chosen one of Radiohead!
Thats a pretty big compliment in my book!
Variety is good!
Posted by: bovril on May 1, 2004 06:21 AMterrible theyve killed an otherwise amazing song >i hate the darkness
Posted by: on May 7, 2004 02:08 PMLook, I like radiohead, but can everyone please stop just putting down the darknes like they are against radiohead. Just because you like radiohead does not mean you have to hate the darkness, and vice-versa. They are both bands of immense talent and style and have a lot to bring to the music industry. Lets just stop acting like a bunch of grunge fans and look foreward to a future of great music!
Posted by: will on May 24, 2004 02:35 PMI have a point to make - whatever your opinion may be, it doesn't matter. It happened. You can't change anything if you don't like it. It isn't going to affect the greater world like, politically or anything is it?!
Posted by: Kat on June 2, 2004 02:19 PMwhy is this song great?
tough question indeed.
first of all, let's see what radiohead (the best band on the world) are about? they are about alienation. about fear. about walls falling down. people being torn apart by the way we live our own meaningless lifes. about hope.
yorke's vocals are moving and sensitive.
music is epic, but still small and introspective. this song is bout looking devil's beedy little eyes.
darkness come from another school of rock music. they are not artist (i can't find a better term) they are entertainers. good entertainers i might say. music they make is brainless music, based on that rock credo "sex drugs and rock n roll" which spells hedonism my friends. stadium rock. cock rock. masses. fun fun fun, in the most vulgar and primitive way.
and they do it great! they help you forget yr troubles and have fun.
we need darkness to relax us, and we need radiohead to make us think.
using the same song? why not! things can be funny, and things can be serious. it all depends on the way you look at them.
hooray for darkness i say! hooray!
this is a fantastic cover - what would be the point of doing it just like radioheads version-
the darkness have put their own stamp on the song
This is the worst "cover" I have ever heard. It sounds like someone gave Ronnie James Dio a bag of crystal meth and a fucked up tab of Street Spirit. There should be some sort of law against leting such a beautiful song to be raped by a bunch of castrated assholes.

Posted by: Idunno on June 15, 2004 06:16 PMIt seems the rule is simple: if someone covers a song from your favourite band (and by your definition the best band in the world) then they are poo

or look up "Radiohead Rorschach" on google.
Radiohead is played to a class of schoolchildren, and they have to draw what they "see":
"...For the first few songs, the kids hardly move, scarcely even changing facial expressions. One girl plants her head on her desk face-first. The "hold your head in your hands and look completely confused" look is extremely popular...
...Returning to Hail to the Thief for the grand finale, Mitsi's announcement that "Sail to the Moon" will be our last song earns a chorus of "Yessss" and several robust fist-pumps. Thom has made few fans..."
;o)
Best band in the world? Nope! Neither are the Darkness; Get over it. Why are people slagging off the bands? It's not about the band.
It's a great song, both versions are cool...and different styles. Personally I play the Darkness version more, because it's more upbeat, and I don't feel like bursting into tears or slitting my wrists ALL the time ;o)
Posted by: AndrewD on June 15, 2004 07:12 PMThis Darkness is S***, the radiohead song is slow to build emotion and works, it is to make you feel like giving up everything whilst the darkness song is just a quick and very poorly made cover, this song must be played in acoustic to get the best effect
Posted by: SeveredSpirit on August 1, 2004 05:40 AMthis cover fucking rocks the shit!!!
Posted by: Aaron on August 16, 2004 04:37 AMthis cover fucking rocks the shit!!!
Posted by: Aaron on August 16, 2004 04:37 AMI love the Darkness, They Rock, But so do Radiohead. They could have done the song the same so that all the die hard radio head fans would be happy but they didn't. The put their own personal touch on it because that is what music is about. You may say that they recked a perfect song, But to them they only improved it. They Put there impression on a song they liked and i think that that is great.
Posted by: Daniel on August 20, 2004 08:10 PMwhoever plays a cover of Radiohead, the standard will be still far off.. No matter how good the artist is... Radiohead is the greatest band alive... Superb combination of Thom Yorke and johnny greenwood... But still, thumbs up to the darkness for covering one of the greatest song by radiohead!!
Posted by: an on August 21, 2004 11:36 AMWow I think this would be an amasing song, IF i hadnt hears the radiohead one first, theyre both very good but radiohead takes the cake, it has much more SOUL than the darkness one, But i can respect the way the darkness covered it in an original way (not original for them i suppose though ^_^ )
