Ben Just Wants To Have Fun (Tuesday Tunes)

Ben Gibbard (of Death Cab For Cutie and the Postal Service) has a knack for taking pop covers and breathing genuine life into them. This week's tunes are fine examples:

"Complicated," the April Lavigne hit from a couple of years ago
"Girls Just Want To Have Fun," the Cyndi Lauper anthem

A while back on...was it pitchfork? There was an article by Travis Morrison of the Dismemberment Plan who talked about how much he and Ben Gibbard liked "Complicated". They were also big fans of Phil Collins, which made me feel good, as am I.

Hey, that's a different "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" than I have...and it would be so much better if it wasn't for the damned hand-clapping. God, I hate that so much.

i have the other 'girls' version - the one where the crowd doens't recognize the song until the chorus - i agree completely about the clapping. the (an) other version is available at http://www.geocities.com/dcfc_tour/

i love the orginal version of "complicated". honestly, as much as i love him, i don't think ben does it justice. carissa's wierd played that same song at sxsw here in austin last year, with ben on tambourine.

i decided my favorite thing about these tracks is all his commentary, and the part where he tells the audience "this is serious!"

I wouldn't call it a knack as much as an irritating tendency.
