I started making my wife a Valentine's mix yesterday, digging through cd's I haven't listened to in months, adding a hundred or so songs to a prospective playlist to be weeded down to less than 80 minutes.
What would you put on a Valentine's mix cd for your significant other?
Posted by david on February 09, 2004Some of my ol' favorites are:
*That's How Strong My Love Is* by Otis Redding
*It's Written In The Stars* by Paul Weller
*Hungover Together* by Supersuckers
"All My Little Words" - Magnetic Fields
Posted by: Doug on February 9, 2004 11:17 AM"Mazzie" by Eva Trout. I don't know what the song's lyrics mean, but it just exudes passion.
"A Thousand Hours" - The Cure
"Interlude" - Morrissey / Siouxsie
Good question. The songs played at proms or the hits during high school years always seem a sentimental favorite around here, so I'd say include some love songs from her high school years.
Posted by: Terry on February 9, 2004 03:35 PMSome personal favorites:
"Wembley" The Candy Skins
"Alison" Elvis Costello
"Sally Cinnamon" and/or "Standing Here" The Stone Roses
"Into the Mystic" Van Morrison
"Collarbone" Poi Dog Pondering
"Thelma" and/or "Duncan" Paul Simon
"Beast of Burden" Rolling Stones
I'm not sure if they'd be allowed, but I think "It always comes as a surprise" by the Pet Shop Boys is one of the sweetest, most romantic songs ever.

Posted by: josh on February 9, 2004 05:19 PM"Do You Realize" The Flaming Lips.
Too easy, but necessary: "Something" by the Beatles.
"The Blower's Daughter" Damien Rice
"Close the Door" Clem Snide
Nice and timely question, by the way. Hope some of these helped.
Posted by: Shaun on February 9, 2004 05:29 PMHi! I love reading your blog, and couldn't resist adding to this list. Just a few songs that came to mind:
The Lemonheads, "Into Your Arms"
Beth Orton, "I Love How You Love Me"
Oasis, "She Is Love"
And, if it's not too well-known, The Cure's "Love Song". I didn't realize how much I enjoyed it until I heard Death Cab's cover, which was superb. I can't wait to see the final list!

You know I'm not sure why, but the first song that came to mind was the Replacements' "Answering Machine."

"dos gardenias" buena vista social club
"into my arms" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
been reading your blog for a few weeks now. it's fantastic here. I'll be crashing on the couch for a while.
"Have I Told You Lately", Van Morrison (it makes me cry every time I hear it. Very sentimental song for me.)
"Crazy Love", Van Morrison (another sentimental favorite)
"She", Elvis Costello
"In Your Eyes", Peter Gabriel (not the "best" romantic tune, per se. Just another sentimental one. There's nothing like walking into an NHL game, finding your seat, and having someone play it for you.)
Far too many Sinatra tunes for me to pick one.
There are tons of "romantic" songs that get to me. A lot of them are very corny, and I'm way too cool to post them here. Really. :-)
Posted by: kelly on February 10, 2004 06:36 AMThanks, all, I'm giving everything suggested that i haven't heard a listen. I decided to make two mixes: one of love songs, the other of anti-love songs (for balance).
