It's a light week for music releases, I'll definitely be picking up the Parkinson's benefit album but not much else. The album features Neko Case, Dar Williams, Lucy Kaplansky, Alejandro Escovedo and many other alt-country favorites, all singing for a good cause.
There are other releases that intrigue me this month, notably the remastered Miles Davis box sets. Am I missing anything?
Various Artists: Parkinsong 1: 38 Songs of Hope [cd]
Sloan: Action Pact (with extra tracks) [cd]
Miles Davis: Complete in a Silent Way Sessions (extra tracks) (box set) (original recording remastered) [cd]
Miles Davis: Complete Columbia Studio Recordings (extra tracks) (box set) (original recording remastered) [cd]
Miles Davis: Complete Bitches Brew Sessions (extra tracks) (box set) (original recording remastered) [cd]
Vatious Artists: Hallucinations: Psychedelic Pop Nuggets [cd]
Lloyd Cole: Plastic Wood [cd]
Syd Barrett: Radio One Sessions [cd]
Graham Parker: Struck By Lightning [cd]
Trax Records 20th Anniversary Collection (box set) [cd]
Various Artists: Tribute to the Darkness [cd]
Friends - The Series Finale (Limited Edition) [dvd]
The Jetsons - The Complete First Season [dvd]
The Fog of War - Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara [dvd]
The Godfather [dvd]
A Short Film About Love [dvd]
A Short Film About Killing [dvd]
Thee Headcoats + Thee Milkshakes: The Bands of Billy Childish [dvd]
I'll be picking up Das Not Compute by Division of Laura Lee.
Posted by: Matt on May 10, 2004 08:49 AMGood call, Matt, I picked that up last weekend, but assumed it had already been released. It's good, but not as good as "Black City" (which I love).
Posted by: david on May 10, 2004 09:22 AMdon't bother w/the godfather. it's the same mediocre video transfer as the trilogy set that came out a year or so ago, and they are at work on a new special edition (w/a supposedly much cleaner transfer) for sometime in the next year or so. don't let the studios make you "douple dip" - be patient.
btw: thanks for the heads up on "the fog of war" - i had no idea it was coming out on dvd so soon.
Posted by: mr g on May 10, 2004 11:49 AMThis is a real wildcard from the past, but try Laura Nyro on CD. She was a 70's singer and composer, and sang in a clear, high soprano in sort of an R&B meets Lillith Fair meets Lounge Lizard meets chanteuse style.
Incredible intellect and lyrics, but definitely an acquired taste.
those miles davis sets are all the same as the currently available sets- they just ditch the smaller metal box for a big longbox... the miles davis "jack johnson" box set from last year is especially sweet though (on random play at least).
first i cursed sloan for playing here the same night as califone, now i'm daming them for adding bonus tracks to the domestic version when i bought the import last summer...
ps- a certain robert pollard also releases a certain solo album on a certain 11th of may.
Posted by: ned on May 10, 2004 01:58 PMWhat I will be calling around for tommorow:
Charalambides - Joy Shapes (Kranky)
Loscil - First Narrows (Kranky)
Thee Silver Mountain Reveries - Pretty Little Lightning Paw (Constellation)
And a long shot but worth tracking down:
Hans Appelqvist - Bremort (Komplott)
cheers!
Posted by: jubal harshaw on May 10, 2004 02:20 PMI forgot about the Pollard disc, my wife usually preorders them from Luna for me (whether I want them or not). I've had it about a week and still haven't cracked the cellophane.
Thanks for the tips, Jubal, I forgot about the Charalambides record, and I'll be checking out the others.
