The Austin Chronicle chronicles the last day of that city's Tower Records.
The Advocate examines summer reading for gay readers.
"The songs were designed to show the sensitivity of a slacker. But onstage, Skinner played up his inner Beastie Boy." The Chicago Daily Herald reviews last night's Streets show.
The Houston Voice remembers Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas's visit to Dallas in 1935.
The 365 Days Project is alive and well, thanks to UbuWeb hosting the archives. If you missed any of this outsider music, enjoy the downloads as well as the song descriptions. My personal favorite: "Thanks for the Memories, Paul 'Bear' Bryant" (mp3 link) by Virginia Rogers.
Posted by david on June 25, 2004As I began reading the story about Austin's Tower Records I just knew that the evil spectre of online music downloading would be mentioned. And I wasn't disappointed. So am I correct to understand that all record stores (that don't cater to vinyl vultures or some other such super-specialty niche) will cease to exist? For pete's sake, apparently the store moved a large amount of merchandise once it MARKED DOWN PRICES. A Coconut's in my town closed down recently, but not before slashing the prices on new stuff by 25%. Let me tell you, every day I went in there during those dying days to judge by the ringing of the cash register you'd reckon that legions of angels were getting their wings.
Hoo-rah! Thanks for pointing the way to the revived 365 Days Project! "Roundabout" by the Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band is not to be missed!
