Bodywork For Whiplash
A new client came to me yesterday suffering from whiplash and fibromyalgia as a result of an automobile accident that occurred 15 years ago. He said he'd been going to a chiropractor for years and it wasn't until the doctor performed acupressure on him that he realized his problem was muscular. He got about a month of relief with the acupressure, but repeated treatments were resulting in diminishing returns, and he needed treatments weekly.
When he came to me, I told him that I had several techniques that might help find the source of his muscle contracture. Today I worked mostly to ease muscle tension and get him comfortable. I plan to use Craniosacral therapy because it helped me with my whiplash. Despite a head injury sustained during his accident, I found little evidence of adhesions, which means the injury left little lasting damage in the head.
By the end of the session, I had made some headway into the tension at the base of the skull (pdf), and found a veritable bevy of tension at the front of the neck which I plan to address in our next session. He left very pleased because the therapy felt better and left him more comfortable than he expected. He also said he wished he'd tried massage therapy earlier (but hadn't because he believed it was a bunch of hooey.) I look forward to finding the primary source of his tension and hope to relieve him of his cycle of pain.
