OCD No Laughing Matter
A psychiatric condition portrayed humorously on TV's Monk is no laughing matter. Hand washing, hoarding, and checking in excess are characteristics of obsessive compulsive disorder.
Now a study points to an understanding of the condition - and goes on to say that the different behaviors may represent distinctly different syndromes.
Scientists have demonstrated that each of the three behaviors activated a different brain region.
The researchers expressed hope that the findings could lead to new ways to understand and treat the disorder, which is thought to affect from 1 percent to 3 percent of the population.
Antecdotally, massage reduces the severity of symptoms in many mental illnesses.
