Post-Polio Syndrome Aided With Massage
Massage is playing a role in helping rehabilitate patients suffering with post-polio syndrome.
The actual number of people who suffer from post-polio is hard to quantify because many of the symptoms mirror other ailments, as well as the natural aging process.
In recent years, medical clinics that specifically deal with rehabilitation and research related to post polio have started to crop up across the nation.
Kaufman has been prescribed specialized exercise routines, some of which he can do at home and other water isometrics that must be performed in a swimming pool. Nutritionists at the institute, which is affiliated with the Conemaugh Health System, also suggested a special diet.
Duryea noted the Johnstown clinic offers physical therapy, occupational therapy, neuropsychology, nutrition counseling, pain control, orthotics, acupressure, stress management, relaxation and stretching exercises and aromatherapy. The clinic also offers various massage therapies.
