Medication Recall Boost Alternative Therapies
Ever since the health alerts regarding Vioxx, Celebrex, Bextra and the over the counter drug Aleve, more doctors are suggesting alternative therapies for pain management. Techniques such as acupuncture, guided imagery and biofeedback have little negative side effects, and clinical trials are showing that these can be viable options for pain relief.
Other options for pain relief are cognitive therapy, movement therapy, osteopathic and chiropractic adjustments and massage. "What works for one person doesn't work for another," Herman said. "The more alternatives, the better."
Massage: The stroking or kneading of sore muscles by a therapist can increase blood flow to painful areas, sometimes providing relief, according to the Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. But the therapist should be trained in handling arthritis.
