Breaking The Food/Reward Habit
In a continuing effort to shrink our ever-widening waistlines, the USDA is releasing the new food pyramid in a couple of weeks.
Indications are that the new icon -- whether it's a pyramid or not -- will put more emphasis on weight management, adequate nutrients within calorie needs, and a distinction between "good" and "bad" fats.
What's especially challenging is breaking habits and traditions regarding food, especially around holidays or a job well done. "A lot of overweight adults have no clue what a nonfood reward might be," she says. "Maybe you could get a massage or a manicure. We need to learn how to reward ourselves with fun things that don't involve food."
