Yoga For Seniors
Yoga is becoming more popular among the senior set because of the benefits it can bring to an aging body. Not only can it bring flexibility to aging joints, it can serve to strengthen muscles in those who are less than active. Personally, I believe yoga lengthens people's lives no matter how old you are.
Yoga's popularity has been growing. According to the Yoga Research and Educational Council in Santa Rosa, Calif., there are about 16.5 million yoga followers in the United States.
Yoga may be better recognized as a practice that twists and contorts the body into poses, but Foeller used less challenging poses for her group. But make no mistake, yoga can be a workout.
"You're actually working your legs, shoulders, arms, and when you come up, your chest," Fine said. "As you get older, you need some help, but nothing that will hurt your bones and knees."
Foeller said yoga is popular because it teaches students how to detect tension in the body and relax.
