State Licensing Differs For Professionals

Many professions require state licensing for professionals to practice their trades. After finishing the required schooling and sometimes an internship, passing an exam and paying a licensing fee, professionals are free to ply their trade.

In Iowa, for example, the licensing bureau — annual fees range from $50 for barbers to $140 for psychologists.

Separate examining boards are responsible for physicians, dentists, pharmacists and nurses.

After college, funeral-directors-in-training must pass national and state exams, then complete a yearlong internship to earn a license. The internship requires them to work and file reports on 25 funerals and 25 embalmings.

For massage therapists, depending upon the state, there is an exam about the laws governing massage therapy. And then there is the practical exam. Many states will accept passage of the National Certification Exam as competence in the industry.

For those getting ready to take the National Certification Exam, I recommend Garofano's Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork. It has four sample exams. If you complete each one a couple of times, you'll be more than prepared for the national certification exam.
