Taking Care Of Katrina Evacuees

Evacuees from Hurricane Katrina who were lucky enough to land in Pittsburgh have found one-stop-shopping for getting their lives back together again.

Booths set up in the room of the large North Side facility offer help with a variety of services, some of which at first glance seem unnecessary for evacuees -- like providing bus schedules or banking services. And one of the booths provides, you guessed it, massage therapy, whose role in stress management has been proven from studies conducted by the Touch Research Institute.

The state's Bureau of Vital Statistics booth has helped more than 30 people in Pittsburgh apply for birth certificates, including a few who did not have valid photo IDs, said Janice Marks-Tummavichakul, who was staffing the booth.

We have several families that evacuated from Hurricane Katrina in the north Alabama area, and specifically our town. My coworker and I developed coupons and delivered them to a beleaguered extended family that has sought refuge here. Our prayers go out to all evacuees and I hope their adopted communities are taking good care of them.
