Know When Not To Work On A Client
One client was trying to talk their spouse into coming to see me. Their spouse, it seemed, was suffering neck pain with numbness in their arms. Shortly before Christmas, their pain escalated, so my client thought it would be a good idea to bring them to me.
As it turns out that person never made it to see me and I am grateful. Following an MRI it was discovered that this client is suffering from a serious neck condition that will require surgery.
The client intake interview is crucial for discovering conditions and symptoms that contraindicate massage. Clients with undiagnosed conditions that cause unbearable pain or numbness should be referred to their doctor. When working with serious medical conditions, I am more comfortable if my client has been cleared by their doctor for massage.
