New Twists In Physical Therapy
The Arizona Republic speaks to several physical therapists about the changes in the field, including exercise regimens, spinning classes, and whole body vibration.
In the old days, physical therapy was often a monotonous repetition of exercises and lifting weights. But with the changing needs of the population, Elsner says, therapists have to work to make each regimen work for the individual. "That's the part I like."
Traditional physical methods, such as working with weights, large fitness balls and stretching, still work well, Elsner says.
"A lot of this stuff was used 30 years ago," he says. "What's different is the way we use it."
So he gives clients tasks, such as playing catch with a heavy medicine ball while perched on one leg. Another client might have to scoot around the room several times while seated on a rolling office chair. He's had some clients use the stair-climbing machine with their hands, and others ride the stationary bike with no seat.
