The Theme For Today Is Feet

I had a question about feet that I'm having a hard time finding specific information about. However, in search I did find a useful article about how to take care of plantar faciitis:

The classic sign: severe pain with the first few steps in the morning or when starting any activity from rest. This is plantar fasciitis, a common cause of heel and foot pain. The plantar fascia is a fibrous sheet that runs from the heel to the toes on the bottom of the foot. Pain is caused when the fascia/sheet sustains collagen degeneration, particularly at the attachment to the heel bone at the bottom of the foot.

I found another good source for general information concerning problems common to the feet.

However, my question concerns something I frequently see in people's feet (especially the elderly) that appears to be hardened crystals of skin. They can be anywhere on the foot--this week I found several on the underside of the fourth toe. I thought they may corns, but they don't fit the classic description and they may show up where pressure is not a problem. If anyone knows what I'm talking about and can let me know I'd appreciate it.
