Massaging Body-Conscious Individuals
CareFair.com posted an interesting article on how massage therapists deal with body-conscious clients. Most interestingly, the site interviews several clients of differing body types (and attitudes towards their bodies), and gets their opinion of what getting a massage means to them. Massage therapists also gave their opinions about massaging people of different body types.
Five therapists said very close to the same thing when asked how they felt about massaging clients of all weights. The consensus was that their first thoughts are not on the client’s physique (although they do notice,) it’s on their health. If they feel a client’s weight may play a part in their well-being, they may discuss it as part of a health plan. All five therapists said that they’ve trained on so many body types that it doesn’t matter any more. Each said that body odor was more offensive than size.
