Hemorrhoids

A client, upon hearing about my visceral manipulation training, asked if I could do anything to help them with their hemorrhoids (!!). Laws and rules are pretty clear that penetration of any body cavity is prohibited and beyond the scope of practice for a massage therapist. Fearing that they would have to undergo surgery, they were willing to try anything to prevent going under the knife. So I decided to do some research in hopes of finding them relief.

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in and around the anus. The condition is very common among both men and women with 50% of the population having the condition at least by age 50.

Hemorrhoids may result from straining to move stool. Other contributing factors include pregnancy, aging, chronic constipation or diarrhea, and anal intercourse.
Hemorrhoids usually are not dangerous or life threatening. In most cases, hemorrhoidal symptoms will go away within a few days.

For immediate relief of swelling and pain associated with hemorrhoids, warm sitz baths and over-the-counter cooling wipes are available. Also, keep the area clean with warm soap and water and prevent over-wiping as this may irritate sensitive tissues. Also, over-the-counter creams and suppositories may be used or prescribed by your doctor. Always, if there is any blood associated with a bowel movement, it is a good idea to check with a doctor to rule out any more serious conditions.

Ways to prevent hemorrhoids are drink plenty of water, exercise, increase fiber in the diet to soften stools which helps prevent straining or excess pressure to empty the bowel.
