My Sister's Ankle

I was home to visit my family for Thanksgiving this past week. It gave me the opportunity to see how my sister, who broke her ankle this past January, is recovering. She has recovered nicely and is actually running on the ankle. The flexibility of that ankle is reduced compared with the other one and she believes that the plates and pins may be reducing her range of motion.

Unless the pins start to back out on their own, she's not inclined to have them surgically removed. Also, unless there is an issue with the hardware, it is unlikely that insurance would pay for the procedure. Then there is the pain and recovery of surgery--it's not something she is looking forward to now that she's more active again.

Massaging the ankle, it felt stiff. She showed me range of motion and compared the ankles together. What I found when I worked in the ankle was tender areas that I believe are myofascial restrictions. The restrictions were acutely painful. The next morning following my ministrations, there was no change in ankle. I guess massage won't help improve the long-term effects of having a plate in your ankle.
