Abdominal Wall Continued

Today in gross anatomy we continued our examination of the body wall muscles. We reviewed what we covered in class earlier this week (see January 15 post). Then we expanded on some biomechanical issues concerning body wall muscles, such as internal obliques and external obliques being antagonists. They also work to assist each other with certain movements such as forward rotation of the torso.

Then we went over material that is new for me, innervation and blood supply to the abdominal wall muscles. Today's lecture will assist me in filling out my flash card in these areas.

Another area we studied was the formation of the inguinal canal. Great examples of the components that make up the structure we uncovered in cadaver lab. I managed to cut the inguinal ligament on my side of the body before I knew I was into the structure. No future in surgery for me! I jokingly call myself the butcher to the amusement of my classmates because I keep accidentally cutting things I'm not supposed to. Luckily there are two sides of the body so we can see those structures intact.
