Injury-Free Moving

We've moved our residence to another city this past week. Following are some tips for packing and moving that should make moving safe and, well, somewhat easier.

Begin sorting and packing non-essential items about two weeks before you move. This will help you clear the clutter and reduce the amount of stuff you have to move. Hold a yard sale and/or donate to charity what doesn't sell. Clean as you go. One tool that I found essential was an extendable Swiffer duster.

Many moving companies suggest using uniform sized boxes for ease of packing. I agree up to a point. New boxes are expensive, not only to your pocketbook, but to the environment, as well. Don't be shy about asking friends who have moved to borrow or keep their boxes. Also, liquor stores have lots a great sturdy boxes that are a good size for packing books. Many also come with cardboard dividers which are great for packing glasses.

Most of all, use common sense when packing. According to Moving.com, keep the weight of your boxes reasonable. If possible, put heavy items in small boxes to make them easier to carry. And, of course, lift correctly to prevent back injury. Plan ahead before lifting. Never bend your back to pick something up. Lift close to your body. Hold the object close to your body while transporting it. Feet shoulder width apart. Bend your knees and keep your back straight. Don't twist or bend. Tighten your stomach muscles. Lift with your legs. Keep your eyes up. If you're straining, get help.

One of the most useful tips I read, again from Moving.com, involved preparing for your first night's stay at your new home.
* For each person in the household: a change of clothes, a towel, prescription drugs, a toothbrush, and other personal items.
* For everyone: plastic utensils, paper plates, paper towels, plastic cups, toilet paper, toiletries, trash bags, a flashlight, first aid kit including pain relievers, pencil and paper, snacks, beverages, and re-closable plastic bags.
* Small tool kit for re-assembling items that couldn't be moved whole.
