"Gimme Gimme Gimme" by Stace Budzko
Inspired by Black Flag’s "Gimme Gimme Gimme"
As a child he would gobble Flintstones Chewables until Fred, Wilma, and Bamm-Bamm sent him on the chase for more. “I completely understand,” his mother would offer from the bed, feeding him her latest Valium script, “now this is how we dream.” And at a later point, after Hanna-Barbera and Roche Pharma play a bandy number on his GABA receptors, well after all these fits and shakes and disinhibitions, when he can only mouth gimme gimme gimme his doctor will lean in close, as if to elbow away the DSM-5 with its recognizable conditions, those predictable outcomes, and implore, “Please, tell me about the wonder of it all.”
Stace Budzko has been published and/or anthologized in New Micro, Fiction Attic Press, Southeast Review, New World Writing, Necessary Fiction, Hint Fiction, Press 53, PANK, Night Train, The Collagist, Field Guide to Flash Fiction, Brevity & Echo, Flash Fiction Forward and elsewhere. Audio, art, and screen adaptations of his work have received numerous awards and showcases. He currently lives in Portland, Oregon.
