"I haven't seen my weekend in a while." by Benjamin Niespodziany

Inspired by Naji's "10 Cubed"

I step outside to catch my breath - accept the breeze - and see I am still inside - I have been in here for many years - the window overgrown with garden - the window synthetic - the window ready - my beard - it touches the ground - I have been in here for many years - the bathtub is my civil war - the bird's nest is my only concern - my couch is but a fading space - my couch astounds me every day - the ghosts - hold me up like nothing - the ghosts with hopeful tones - my fingers are made of glass - smudged glass - greased glass - my legs - two dazed cobwebs - my legs - broken spiders - admirers of the welt - the window shows nothing but vines - the hole in the floor shows the ground below - the soil of my soon to seek - my mask, my chinstrap - my mask, my hidden wince - my mask, my face all over - walking the hall to fetch the desk - yes - the granola family is grieving - yes - this week came to a head - yes - this week reached a year - this year - the lonely year - the loneliest year - and here - we're here - inside - old and tired - so festive and so tired.

Benjamin Niespodziany is a Pushcart Prize nominee recently featured in the Wigleaf Top 50. He has had work published in Fairy Tale Review, Fence (forthcoming), Hobart, and various others. A Returned Peace Corps volunteer, he now works nights in a library in Chicago.
