Friday Five

1. What is your favorite time of year?

The transition between winter and spring.

2. What is it about your favorite season that, well, makes it your favorite season?

February through April are fantastic, life is being renewed everywhere. I'm spending inordinate time looking through seed catalogs, visiting nurseries, preparing our garden, and finally, getting the plants and seeds in the ground. Being able to watch the birds in their nests as well as wildlife rustling on our walks makes this time of year very special. Plus, the warming weather gives us an excuse to wander around the southeast and find interesting places to explore.

3. What is your least favorite time of year? Why?

My birthday, I have no problem getting older, but I don't enjoy being the center of attention. Like J. Alfred Prufrock, I'm more of a supporting kind of guy.

4. Do you do anything to celebrate or recognize the changing of seasons?

A lot centers on our garden. In fall we clean out the beds, add mulch, and prepare the beds for winter. In spring we work in the mulch, fertilize and plant our varieties of vegetables, flowers and herbs that we love.

5. What's your favorite thing to do outside?

Walk, we try to walk several times a week by the Tennessee River, and are always amazed by the wealth of wildlife and fauna we encounter. Blue herons, cranes, rabbits and beavers usually stop by to say hello when we're taking our strolls.
