Mountain Goats

To me, the Mountain Goats have always been a band that was always on my "to listen" list, and recently they jumped off that and into my "singing in the car" list. I've been playing "All Hail West Texas" on repeat lately, it was an easy segue from the plaintive melancholy of Bright Eyes and Desaperacidos and the Neutral Milk Hotel shows that frequently haunt our house.

The Mountain Goats are John Darnielle (who also writes the excellent zine Last Plane To Jakarta). The songs are about youth, enchantment, disenchantment and growing up, and gleam with wit, charm and honesty. The Goats come across as a cross between Conor Oberst unplugged and Jeff Mangum at his most spare, and to me, that's a wonderful thing.
