When The Drive-In Closes
Two members of At The Drive-In form The Mars Volta. Their concept album, De-Loused at the Comatorium, is getting a decent amount of hype, I may need to give it a listen:
The Mars Volta, then, while still retaining the electrifying wailing and urgent riffing that marked At the Drive-In's best bits, tends toward deliberately making its meaning abstract. "De-Loused" is loosely based on the rough life of El Paso musician and artist Julio Venegas, a junkie who once overdosed so severely he languished in a coma for a week. He recovered, somewhat - Rodriguez-Lopez remembers him being fairly incoherent from then on - but eventually killed himself years later.
