Webb Wilder Sighting

To paraphrase an old joke, we went to a hockey game last night and a nostalgic music show broke out. The Predators were trailing the Avalanche 1-0 after a period of play, and who should appear on the bandstand as interim entertainment, but Webb Wilder and the Beatnecks!

When I was in college, there were a couple of bands that I tried catch whenever they played nearby: Jason and the Scorchers, The Brains, REM, Pylon, Let's Active and Webb Wilder. His offbeat, upbeat version of alt-country (then termed "alternative country") always assured an entertaining show. Webb always weaved clever, funny yarns and had an ear for the perfect cover songs, like Steve Earle's "The Devil's Right Hand." When I discovered we had a mutual friend, I finagled a meeting the next time I was in Nashville, and Webb was as down-to-earth as his stage presence. A couple of years later, it made me truly happy that "Human Cannonball" became a hit and Webb received some MTV face time.

It would seem Webb has little time for music these days with his acting and film-making, but it's good to see him still rocking and rolling. I'll leave you with the Webb Wilder credo (download mp3):

Work hard
Rock hard
Eat hard
Sleep hard
Grow big
Wear glasses if you need 'em
