I have to admit, I was apprehensive when I picked up The Best American Nonrequired Reading 2004. I had not read the first two editions in this series, and a quick glance through the contributors list offered a couple of stories I had already consumed through the New Yorker, Esquire and Atlantic Monthly.
Having put my faith in editor Dave Eggers and his crew of student assistants, I was rewarded with an excellent read (once I slogged past Viggo Mortensen's tedious introduction). The depth (and breadth) of the offerings are vast. Comics, short fiction, and non-fiction are all represented, from magazines, literary journals, and websites. Eggers once again wields his editorial prowess, and the reader is rewarded.
My next book is Less than Heroes, a graphic novel by David Yurkovich, set in the town of my birth, Philadelphia.
