I finished The Midnight Disease: The Drive to Write, Writer's Block, and the Creative Brain, by Alice W. Flaherty, this morning. The books premise, to understand the creative brain through science, is almost overwhelming, but Dr. Flaherty uses her skill as both a neurologist and storyteller to the utmost. Not only the desire to create is studied, but also the natural blocking mechanism ("writer's block").
I enjoyed this book. Though I am not schooled in anatomy or neuroscience, Dr. Flaherty illustrated her points clearly, even to a novice. If you've ever wondered about the brain and creativity, this book is for you.
My next book is Freaks and Fire: The Underground Reinvention of the Circus, by J. Dee Hill.
