5 Down, 47 To Go (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

McSweeney's Quarterly Concern Volume 18 manages to celebrate both the old and the new. The fiction is solid throughout the paperback volume, with exceptional submissions from Roddy Doyle and Daniel Orozco. The jewel in this volume, though, is the first edition of McSweeney's Wholphin DVD. Filled with short films, the disc features a short Al Gore documentary by Spike Jonze, an excerpt of David O. Russell's controversial documentary on US soldiers in Iraq, and even a Turkish sitcom episode with alternate subtitles. The premiere disc impressed me enough to subscribe to the quarterly DVD.

Since spring training has already started, my next book is a baseball book, James Sturm's The Golem's Mighty Swing.
