41 Down, 11 To Go (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

After breaking down and finally reading the excerpt of Chris Adrian's post-apocalyptic novel, The Children's Hospital, included in McSweeney's Quarterly Concern #20, I couldn't wait to read the rest. The book was anything but disappointing, Adrian has drawn a world after a great flood that includes only a children's hospital and the angels that protect/guide its inhabitants. Big issues abound, but Adrian deftly and charmingly draws readers into this new world. More than a morality tale, science fiction, or fantasy, The Children's Hospital is hands-down my favorite novel of the year so far.

My next book is The Best American Comics of 2006, edited by Harvey Pekar and Anne Elizabeth Moore.
