With the film, American Splendor, his comics of the same name, and his Letterman appearances, Harvey Pekar has become a bit of a pop culture comics superstar. His being chosen to edit this first installment in the Best American Comics series (with Anne Elizabeth Moore) was no surprise. Most of the big names in comics and graphic novels are represented: Ware, Bechdel, Deitch, Crumb, etc., and the works represented are diverse and consistently interesting. My only criticism is that I have seen several of these works collected in other anthologies, like McSweeney's #13 (the comics issue), or I had read the original graphic novels.
This collection is a great place to start if you are new to comics, or to browse the works of many of today's leading artists.
My next book is Shenzhen: A Travelogue From China, edited by Harvey Pekar and Anne Elizabeth Moore.
