Billboard reports on the burgeoning indie music market in China.
"Everyone in the Chinese music business is inexperienced," says local artist Maku Zhuang, co-founder of Shanghai-based independent label Soma Communications. "There's been no trailblazing success to set an example, and we can't follow overseas models either, because they just don't work in the Chinese market."

"I always joke when people ask me for advice about starting a label," co-founder Josh Rosenfeld said in the label’s conference room, which has no conference table. "I always say, ‘The first band you sign should be Death Cab For Cutie.’"
Tremble Under Boom Lights takes a different tack to year-end lists, and reconsiders his top albums from ten years ago.
