It's fitting that I finished Melissa Joulwan's memoir, Rollergirl: Totally True Tales from the Track, while in Austin for SXSW last week. The book exudes the spirit of Austin, a city that revels in its independence and is proud to keep itself "weird." In this memoir, Joulwan chronicles the birth of flat-track roller derby, while also profiling the skaters and recounting her own adventures in the sport. She is careful to offer more than caricatures of these often imposing figures, and the differences between their on and off-track personas are deftly examined without being exploitive.
