12 Down, 40 To Go (52 Books, 52 Weeks) ("Aya")

I picked up the graphic novel Aya knowing little about the book, besides it had won the 2006 award for Best New Album at the Angouleme International Comics Festival. Marguerite Abouet's storyline of the life of one teen in the Ivory Coast is compelling, funny, and always touching. Through Aya and her friends, Abouet gives us a colorful depiction of the Ivory Coast in the 1970s, one I didn't expect. Clement Oubrerie's accompanying illustrations are simple and light, and almost always enhance the storytelling without overwhelming it.
