36 Down, 16 To Go ("Chance in Hell") (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

The first Fantagraphics graphic novel from Gilbert Hernandez (of Love and Rockets fame) had two things going for it even before I read the first page. First, I am a huge fan of everything Fantagraphic publishes, and have even started collecting their back catalog of books (slowly but surely). Second, Gilbert Hernandes is one of my favorite cartoonists, an artist whose storytelling truly holds up to the emotive line drawings that fill his books. His Palomar series simply amazes me every time I revisit the work.

Chance in Hell is a dark tale of an orphan girl in the, and her world is filled with cruelty, abuse, and few friends. When her protectors are killed, she escapes with a kind man who offers her a relatively normal childhood, but in the end she cannot escape her past or the darkness that seems to follow her. A masterful story told by a talented storyteller this book will stay with you long after you finish the slim volume.

My next book is the The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan.
