About.com lists the top alt rock breakup songs.

The New Yorker features new short fiction by Junot Diaz, "Alma."

At Slate, Los Angeles Times music critic Ann Powers talks about her favorite albums of the year.

Another favorite listen this year came from unrevolutionary country gal Patty Griffin, who released the quiet genre-buster Children Running Through in February. Griffin's not a Young Turk, like Miranda Lambert (whom I like, too), nor a firebrand, like fellow redhead Neko Case. She's just a really good songwriter whose own albums get stuck in the "Americana" category that nobody thinks is sexy anymore. (Oops, I see a theme emerging: middle-aged critic defends middle-aged artists who don't make the "hottie" grade. Sorry to be solipsistic. I promise to write about Lil Wayne's bodacious rhymes in my next post!)

The Age's music blog lists four of the most underrated artists in music.

The Riverfront Times writes an open letter to Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy.

At Salon, Douglas Wolk lists the year's notable graphic novels and comics.

Black Lips frontman Cole Alexander talks to the Sydney Morning Herald.

The Los Angeles Times reviews this year's batch of holiday albums.

Threadless has extended their holiday $10 t-shirt sale through Wednesday.
