3 Down, 49 To Go, "365 Days" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

Julie Doucet is one of my favorite cartoonists, so I have been waiting for this book to be published ever since I heard rumors of its existence. Normally, I am not a fan of writer's lives. I admire the work (and the writer's talent), but often find the human rarely lives up to the expectations brought about by their works. In 365 Days: A Diary, Doucet has crafted a graphic novel of her own life over the space of a year's time and held my attention from the first page to the last.

Doucet chronicles the often unpredictable life of an artist, where income and inspiration are often haphazard. Her honesty is refreshing as she recounts her interactions with friends, family and contemporary artists, even her mini-reviews of books and film had me running Google searches for future reference. I never realized that she also worked in collage, and collage is incorporated into the book to striking effect. Upon finishing the book I had even greater admiration for both the artist and the person.
