7 Down, 45 To Go "The Book of Other People" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)
For The Book of Other People, author Zadie Smith solicited short fiction from an illustrious cast of authors and cartoonist. The only requirement was the creation of a new character, and the resulting stories carry these characters as their titles. These are standout pieces of short fiction, from authors like David Mitchell, Dave Eggers, Miranda July, A.M Homes, amd many more. The cartoonists' pieces are equally impressive, and include contributions by Daniel Clowes and Chris Ware.
My only complaint is that several of these pieces were previously published in the New Yorker, and I had assumed (wrongly) that all these stories were brand new. I always read the New Yorker's fiction, so I had read about a quarter of the book before ever cracking the spine of this collection.
