13 Down, 39 To Go "McSweeney's #26" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)
After being a bit let down by McSweeney's Quarterly Concern's Issue 25 earlier this year, I approached the 26th issue with a bit of trepidation. My worries were unnecessary, as the two volumes of short fiction (split into stories set "overseas" and on "our shores") were filled with quality stories. A third slim book, Where to Invade Next, is the jewel of the issue. Written by Stephen Elliott, the book lists the reasons several foreign nations are threats to the United States and the rest of the world. Inspired by real Pentagon documents, this volume is one of the scariest books I have read all year.
