Why Obama, by Theresa Andersson
Why Obama is a series of guest essays by musicians and authors, where they share their support for Democratic United States presidential nominee Senator Barack Obama and offer arguments why he needs to be elected president of the United States.
Theresa Andersson is a Swedish-born singer-songwriter now living in New Orleans. Her latest album, Hummingbird, Go!, was released earlier this year.
In her own words, here is Theresa Andersson's Why Obama essay:
Unfortunately, since I am a Swedish citizen, I won't be able to vote in the upcoming election. The canditate I was most excited about was Hillary Clinton (I thought she was amazing in the debates). However, given the two choices, there is absolutely no doubt that I would be voting for Obama.
My ideals line up much more closely with Obama's than McCain's.
Aside from being opposed to the war in Iraq, the issue I connect with Obama on most strongly is Universal Health Care. Until recently, I wasn't able to afford health care in the US as a touring musician. I used to think "well, if anything goes wrong, I can always go home to Sweden." The idea that there are millions of Americans who can't afford health care is frightening. The health care system we have in Sweden, though not without its own flaws, is a better system than the one we have here.
Also, after touring in Scandinavia this summer, I know that everyone in Europe is waiting with their fingers crossed- hoping that Barack gets elected. It goes without saying that moving away from the "Yosemite Sam/ Angry Cowboy" image that America currently has would be a great first step in improving this country's world relations.
And finally, Barack has a better campaign song (Stevie Wonder’s "Sign, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours" -- Go, Stevie!
