35 Down, 17 To Go "Bone and Beyond" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

Bone and Beyond is an intriguing collection of Jeff Smith's Bone comics, featuring not only the comics but also early drawings of the character. Carefully curated and published by Columbus Ohio's Wexner Center for the Arts, the book also shares comics of Jeff Smith's influences. The book manages to both share beautifully reproduced artwork of this independent comics legend as well as examine the artist and his work. Essays by Neil Maiman (who compares the Bone comics to Melville's Moby Dick) and others, as well as a lengthy interview with the artist himself, put the work in a critical perspective, not surprising since the book was published in association with a show at the Wexner Center.

As a relative newcomer to comics, I found this book an invaluable resource not only to the works of Jeff Smith, but to independent comic publishing in general.

My next book is Dororo Volume 2, by Osamu Tezuka .
