46 Down, 6 To Go "The Best American Comics 2008" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

The Best American Comics series has quickly become one of the anthologies I anticipate most every year. Jessica Abel and Matt Madden joined the series this year as executive editors, and have helped create (along with tis year's editor Lynda Barry) the yearly compilation I have enjoyed most this year.

The Best American Comics 2008 is curated by cartoonist Lynda Barry, and the volume is worth picking up if only for her introduction alone. The introduction is a comic that explains Barry's lifelong love for the art form, done in her inimitable style.

The artists collected are truly diverse and all at the top of their game. In the past volumes, I felt that certain artists were included more for their reputation than the works represented, but Barry lets no one stand on their laurels. The book is filled with many cartoonists whose work I will pursue diligently, and comics fans will find much to love.

My next book is Black Jack, Volume 1, by Osamu Tezuka.
