5 Down, 47 To Go "Baloney" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

Last year a friend gave me a copy of White Rapids, Pascal Blanchet's graphic novel about the rise and fall of a mythical Quebec town. That quick read has easily become one of my favorite graphic novels.

Blanchet's follow-up to White Rapids, Baloney, was actually written before White Rapids, but has just been translated into English. This tragic story of a butcher mourning the loss of his wife and his daughter, blinded by cataracts and missing an arm and a leg takes a bold turn when an optimistic tutor enters their lives. Blanchet's artwork has a dark, retro quality reminiscent of the film noir of the 1930's, and Blanchet even includes a music playlist for the book filled with dark orchestral movements by Prokofiev, Shostakovitch, and others (indeed, the book is subtitled. "A Tale in 3 Symphonic Acts"). Though not the instant classic White Rapids became, Baloney is still a wonderfully told dark tale of love and sorrow.

My next book is Who Would Buy This? The Archie McPhee Story, by Mark Pahlow.
