6 Down, 46 To Go "Who Would Buy This? The Archie McPhee Story" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

I chose to read Who Would Buy This? The Archie McPhee Story from the title alone. I have long been both a customer and a fan of the Seattle novelty toy store (even back in the days when "mail-order" actually involved the postal service), and was curious about its history.

Surprisingly, this book is a bit short on the actual history of the company. Founder Mark Pahlow devotes a short early section to his own experiences both before and after he started Archie McPhee, but most of the book is dedicated to the products the store has sold. With larger than life photography, the stories behind these products (both hits and failures) come to define the store and its iconoclastic approach to marketing its wares. Even though the book wasn't what I expected, it is still an enjoyable look at one of the country's most interesting vendors (and shapers) of pop culture.

My next book is Black Jack, Volume 3, by Osamu Tezuka.
