8 Down, 44 To Go "The Stuff of Life" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

Among graphic novels, many of my favorites are non-fiction titles that focus on a single theme. In The Stuff Of Life: A Graphic Guide To Genetics And DNA takes a novel approach to explaining human genetics. Mark Schultz's story features an alien explaining human genetics to his ruler (in hopes of diversifying his own species' diversity).

The resulting graphic novel is filled with information, pages of detailed definitions and processes are explained without ever overwhelming the reader. The illustrations by brothers Zander and Kevin Cannon illuminate the concepts clearly and provide the perfect accompaniment to the text. For a non-scientist like myself (whose last exposure to genetics was high school biology), I found the book both entertaining and educational (a rare combination these days).

My only complaint is with the book's printing, one page is included twice while another is absent. I'm sure that will be fixed in the next edition.

My next book is Moresukine: Uploaded Weekly from Tokyo , by Dirk Schwieger.
