Until I saw the documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston, I never knew the singer-songwriter was an accomplished artist. I was familiar with his fascination of comics, but not that he had been featured in art shows around the world.
The book Daniel Johnston collects examples of Johnston's art, mostly cartoons that are as raw and honest as his songwriting. May of these pieces are drawn from Johnston's private collection, and have never been seen by the public. Most impressive was the collection of essays that give insight into his creative vision, written by Harvey Pekar, Jad Fair, and others.
