24 Down, 28 To Go "Gravel, #1" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

When I talk comics with friends, the works of Warren Ellis are often recommended, so I finally picked up an Ellis graphic novel, the first volume of the Gravel series.

Gravel #1 is named for William Gravel, a cantankerous protagonist who combines magic with conventional weapons in his quest to collect the mythical Sigsand Manuscript, vanquishing foes along the way. The monsters can be truly horrifying and the violence gripping, and Ellis clearly enjoys putting his readers at the very edge of their comfort zones (in a very good way).

The dark and atmospheric artwork of Raulo Caceres complements Ellis's characters and storyline perfectly.

What Warren Ellis work should I read next?

My next book is Johnny Hiro Volume 1, by Johnny Hiro.
